Atlantic Voyager - SEPTEMBER 2022

Training Days

SEPTEMBER 15, 2022

Reykjavik – St. Johns

The present understanding is that Vikings crossed the Atlantic hundreds of years before Columbus using only rudimentary navigation techniques that nevertheless allowed them to ‘hop’ from Scandinavia, to Iceland, across to Greenland and then finally down to Newfoundland. Spartan will be following this route across the Atlantic in 2022 with the longest single leg being the voyage from Reykjavik to St.John’s.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Starting in the Icelandic capital , crew will have plenty of opportunity to arrive in Iceland a little before the voyage begins and experience the wild geography and lonely beauty of one of the world’s most beautiful, though infrequently visited countries in the world.  Heading out from Reykjavik we head South West into the wilds of the North Atlantic which Spartan’s 60-80ft yachts and professional crews can handle safely, giving you the opportunity to relax, learn about operating one of these monster craft and enjoy the unique experience of crossing a part of the ocean that few ever venture into.

As we head South West we will get to see whales, dolphins, pelagic seabirds, turtles and of course experience many nights under clear skies not polluted by the light of modern cities. This always gives crew an unprecedented view of the night sky with stars stretching right down to the horizon.

It is important to note that on this kind of voyage, where we are not racing and not stressing boats or crew there is a perfect opportunity to get meaningful one-on-one time with our professional Captains, hear their stories & get input on your own skills and develop a deeper understanding of these incredible pedigree race boats.  Many crew find that after voyages like this they are actually better racers because there was enough time to ask questions and practice new techniques.

St. John’s, Newfoundland.

After a minimum of 1600 Nm we will arrive into the famous Canadian port of St.John’s which has been one of the most remote yet important towns on the North Atlantic coast for hundreds of years.  Fishing fortunes, oil & gas fortunes and the first international wireless transmissions have all had their start in St. John’s, but the town has not slowed its’ pace one iota.

If  we can find any spare room amidst the music-filled and well patronized bars on George St, all our Atlantic Voyager crew will be ‘Screeched in’ as part of an unofficial Newfoundland welcoming ceremony which involves, a Sou’Wester hat, kissing a Cod and a whole heap of local rum. You’ll have to take our word for it- it rounds off the whole trip beautifully!

The Atlantic Voyager Event is a serious offshore passage taken at a steady rate by large ocean-going yachts under the expert command of experienced offshore sailors.  It is a fun, developmental sail training event that will help you push your seamanship skills, gain confidence for longer passages and visit some very interesting maritime haunts along the way that most other sailors have only read about.
