After the excitement of the Regata Del Sol al Sol the return leg to Florida could seem a little mundane but as those who regularly put forth to sea know well- nothing could be further from the truth. Ocean passages are always filled with their own interests, excitement and learning and often in racing the opportunity to get in-depth one-to-one with a pro crew is not available. On a voyage the pace is a little slower, the discussions longer and more descriptive and a real chance to get hands-on and involved with every aspect of the boat suddenly becomes possible. You may race on the foredeck so when are you going to get a chance to get your eye in as a trimmer? You’ll never get off that foredeck! Similarly getting onto the helm is something that happens every watch and suddenly the answer to ‘can you take the helm’ is an emphatic ‘Yes!’.
For cruisers a different kind of learning is possible- our boats complete a 15,000 Nm Atlantic circuit every year meaning there is no shortage of knowledge on board regarding safety gear, safe voyaging practices offshore, weather routing, operation of modern communications devices and electronic navigation in practice.
The tempo may be slower, the meals more leisurely than a race but the chance to get the most from a passage as a student aboard a famous ocean racing yacht could not be more perfectly packaged.
